Chairman: Peter Toyne

Professor Peter Toyne CBE was born near Sheffield in 1939.  He became Chairman of Friends of Cathedral Music in 2002.  After posts as a geographer in Higher Education, with appointments at the Universities of Bristol and Exeter, the West Sussex Institute of Higher Education and N.E.London Polytechnic he became the founding Vice-Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University in 1992.  Throughout his career he has been actively involved with cathedral music and liturgy.  He is a member of the Church of England Synod and has been a member of the Archbishops’ Council.  Among his many current appointments he is a member of the Council of Liverpool Cathedral, Life President of the Liverpool Organists’ Association and President of the Liverpool YMCA.  He is a past Chairman of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society and was High Sheriff of Merseyside 2001/2.  He was Chairman of the Liverpool Culture Company which resulted in the City’s successful bid to be European Capital of Culture 2008.  He is passionate about the need for the great heritage of cathedral music to be supported enthusiastically at this crucial time in its development.  His hobbies include railways and travel and he is a fan of ‘Coronation Street’.  He was awarded a CBE in the Queen's birthday Honours 2009.
