Building
Built as a Benedictine Abbey in 1020 to house the remains of St Edmund, it fell into ruin at the
dissolution of the monasteries. It was rebuilt in the 15/16th centuries and became a
Cathedral in 1914. The new tower and North Transept were completed in 2005. There is a
fine peal of ten bells, cast in 1785, which hangs in the Norman Tower, still in their original
frame.
