Building
The cathedral was originally a Norman church which was rebuilt as Leicester Abbey in the thirteenth
century and then stripped bare at the Reformation. It was much restored by the Victorians with the
tower and roof rebuilt and a spire and gilded rood screen added in the 1860s. The Great South Aisle
dates back to the 1400s, whilst S L Pearson built the Vaughn Porch to the South door, with its
famous 7 statues above the doorway. In the Chancel can be found a memorial stone to Richard III,
killed at nearby Bosworth Field. It became a cathedral in 1927.
