Building
The Foundation is one of the oldest in the country dating back to 648. Construction began in
1079 on the orders of William the Conqueror and was completed in 1093. The squat central
tower was begun in 1202 to replace an earlier tower. Work continued in the 14th, 15th &
16th centuries. The cloister and chapter house were demolished in the 16th century when
the Benedictine Priory was dissolved. T G Jackson carried out restoration work from 1905
- 12 and saved the cathedral from total collapse by packing the foundations with thousands of bags
of concrete, concrete blocks and bricks. The choir stalls were 700 years old in 2008.
