Building
The college buildings were begun by Benedictine monks in the 1470s. They were responsible for the
Chapel and First Court which is today a small medieval, red brick, court handsomely restored by
Dykes Bower in the 1950s. The college was refounded in 1542 as Magdalene College by Thomas Audley,
of Audley End, who ought to have left it well-endowed. The 17th century saw the building of the
elegant Pepys Library, Pepeys was an undergraduate in the 1650s. A C Benson, as Master in the early
20th century, laid the firm foundations of the college's present success in his academic and
building developments.
