Building
The college was founded in 1596 by Lady Francis Sidney, Countess of Sussex on the site of a
Franciscan House, existing for three hundred years before its dissolution by Henry V111. The early
college buildings, including Hall Court, in their charming Elizabethan red brick were completed in
1598. Major improvements took place in the second half of the 17th century, including the Hall
built by James Burrough with its great Rococo interior and the Chapel, redesigned by James Essex in
1770. The end of the 19th century saw the building of Pearson's inspired and charming neo-Jacobean
Cloister Court in 1890, whilst the 20th century saw much expansion with Garden, South, Blundell and
Cromwell Courts.
