The college was founded in 1571 by Hugh Alprice. Its buildings consist of First Quad, with the Chapel, Principal's Lodgings and the Hall, Second and Third Quads as well as several modern Halls of Residence. The Chapel, built in 1621 in the late Gothic style, had its interior drastically altered by G E Street in 1864.
