Building
The college was founded in 1879 to extend to women an Oxford higher education without religious
tests or obligations. It is named after Mary Somerville, 1780-1872, a mathematician of
international reputation, gaining full recognitian as an Oxford College in 1959 and goind co-ed in
1993. There was considerable building in the first half of the 20th centuary, when the Chapel was
built in 1935.
