Building
The college was founded in 1886 by Elizabeth Wordsworth, neice of the poet, and named after Hugh of
Avalon, a 12th century Bishop of Lincoln. Its purpose was to enable poorer women to gain an Oxford
education and to provide a steady supply of church workers and teachers. It moved to a new site
with new buildings completed in 1916 and in 1920 women were allowed to take an Oxford degree. There
was much new building in the second half of the 20th century.
