Organist & Master of the Choristers

Choir
St James' School was founded in 1880 by Canon James Peter Young to provide boy choristers for St
James' Church. This it continues to do though the school is now co-educational and a member of the
Woodard Corporation.
Organ
The 1951 Walker organ replaced an earlier instrument destroyed by enemy action in 1943. It has 57
stops over 3 manuals and the pedal board and received some upgrading in 1976 and again in 1988. A 2
manual extension organ was added in 1971 by Johnson of Cambridge, for accompanying choral services
especially those in the Choir.
Cathedral
Rector
Canon Michael Hunter

Building
Built around 1114, the oldest part of the builing is at the West End, though in the mid 13th
century the arcade pillars and the aisles were rebuilt and doubled in size with their beautiful
Triforium and Clerestory. The 16th century saw the Nave walled off from the Transepts which were
then used for secular purposes. Much restoration began in 1858 and much has been completed in the
last 10 years.
