Building
The present building dates from the 1125 repair of the ruined church by Bishop Celsus. Continuous
rebuilding occurred in the 12th, 13th & 15th centuries. The most extensive rebuilding evident
in today's cathedral occurred between 1834 & 1837, commissioned and largely financed by Bishop
John Beresford. The architect, Lewis Collingham, restored the Nave walls, removed the short wooden
spire, re-opened the clerestory windows restyling them in Decorated Gothic, enlarged the Choir
windows and overlaid the timber vaulting with plasterwork.
