Building
The Cathedral was built between 1853 & 1855 by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the Gothic style, at
the instigation of Bishop Alexander Forbes. He wished to have a 'stately church' which would offer
refuge to the poor souls living in the surrounding tenements. The fine stained glass windows are
mostly by Hardman & Co of Birmingham but with one by Scott & Draper of Carlisle and one by
Gibbs of London. Parts of the font and a cabinet in the church are from the medieval Lindores Abbey
(in Fife); the mosaic reredos at the High Altar was designed by Salvati of Venice
